Coach Profile

Jon SALFIELD

Leon Paul Project’s Head of Performance and Sabre Lead Jon Salfield is a coach who aims not just to develop individual athletes, but to create programmes which allows numerous athletes to develop themselves through engagement in comprehensive and personalised training.

Influenced by many of the leading coaches of recent times, including Christian Bauer, Peter Frohlich, Vilmos Szabo, Giovanni Sirovich and others, Jon has developed a coaching framework of his own which allows fencers to express themselves creatively while maintaining a consistent and focussed approach.

Jon has led the GB Sabre team at numerous Senior, Junior and Cadet European and World Championships, Universiades, and the 2012 Olympic Games, and his athletes have won medals and made finals at Men's and Women's Junior and Cadet European and World Championships, and achieved World Top 30 ranking and L16 results at Senior World level.

“I like to think that when fencers enter The Project, they can switch into a mindset of learning, hard work and engagement. There should be a real feeling of esprit de corps with everyone supporting one another to do well in a high-performance environment. Every session should end with them wanting to think about their session and to return next time ready to take the next steps towards their goals.”
